A psychiatrist is a medical professional who provides psychiatric assessment and treatment to patients. Psychiatrists are trained in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of drug abuse, mental illnesses, including depression, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders, that affect your day-to-day normal life.
A psychiatrist is able to conduct psychotherapy and prescribe medications and other medical treatments.
It is a common misconception that psychiatrists are only used in cases of severe mental illnesses. In reality, a psychiatrist is a doctor who can help in treating a wide range of mental health disorders, family therapy and drug rehab treatment.
They do so by diagnosing the condition and prescribing medications or therapy. People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be drug abuse, depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, thoughts of suicide, frightening hallucinations, or hearing or seeing unworldly “voices” or “entities” Or problems that hamper normal daily lifestyle, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.
A psychiatrist will seek out your medical history before making any diagnosis or giving any treatment advice. They will also ask for information about your family, your childhood, and your social life to get a complete picture of the person you are.
Psychiatrists use a plethora of treatments – including several types of medications, psychotherapy and clinical treatments, based on the individual patient’s stages of diagnosis.
Psychiatrists use a variety of treatments – including medications and various forms of psychotherapy, psychosocial treatments and other therapy treatments, depending on the needs of each patient.
Psychotherapy is often used in conjunction with psychiatric medication to treat long-term drug addiction and mental disorders.
Psychotherapy is a clinical method of treatment for emotional and mental disorders that uses dialogue between a therapist and patient on an individual basis to increase awareness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This therapy is simply used to treat a broad variety of mental disorders and emotional difficulties.
There are many forms of psychotherapy. There are psychotherapies that help patients change behaviors, thought patterns or explore positive relationship experiences to adjust to family and friends.
Some psychotherapies are for forgetting past traumatic experiences. And other psychotherapies are tailored to help patients overcome drug or substance abuse in particular ways.
For example, Cognitive Behavior Therapy -CBT is a short-term method of counseling that focuses on improving individual’s thinking patterns and behaviors, thereby improving their reality perception and lead a better quality of life.
It improves on many types of mental disorders like dysfunctional interpersonal relationships, addiction and drug abuse, sleeping problems and depression.
Psychoanalysis is a form of deep talking therapy that aims to bring unconscious thoughts and feelings to the conscious mind so that the low self-esteem and self-doubting repressed emotions and experiences, for example from past traumatic bullying experiences of teenage years, can be brought to the surface and examined.
People with low self-esteem, lack of motivation, emotional struggles, trauma and personality disorders can benefit from this therapy
The goals for all these treatments are simply to eliminate life hurdles, help disabled and troubled patients to go ahead on their lives.
Although such treatment has been around for decades, the therapy process has changed over time as different Psychiatrist doctors have developed separate new techniques to help patients on particular occasion of mental breakdown or a deadly form of drug abuse or other particular mental illnesses.
Psychiatrists often prescribe medications in combination with psychotherapy.
Other treatments are also sometimes used. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a medical treatment that involves applying electrical currents to the brain, is used most often to treat severe depression that has not responded to other treatments.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are a few of the newer therapies being used to treat some mental disorders. Light therapy is used to treat seasonal depression.
Psychiatrists also help in the treatment of the substance addiction or drug abuse. Psychiatrists, who are doctors that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders, are just as likely to be part of any addiction treatment. They work with psychologist, drug therapists, and counselors to help you in drug abuse recovery.
Addiction psychiatrists may treat any one or all of the following conditions: drug abuse, alcoholism, gambling addiction, or sex addiction.
Addiction psychiatrists would look into the patient’s history and determine how and when addiction trouble began to appear. They work with patients to determine the reasons for the development of their drug or alcohol addiction.
If it is found suitable, they can prescribe medication to control withdrawal symptoms and treat underlying or co-existing psychiatric disorders.
Also they play a role during detoxification session of the patients -the first phase of addiction treatment when addicts are slowly and gradually withdrawn from their cravings of abusive drugs.
Because addiction affect the brain’s neurochemistry easily, the medical expertise of psychiatrists is necessary here.
